Yin and Yang Etched Sterling Silver Earrings
Yin and Yang Etched Sterling Silver Earrings
I got this Yin and Yang pattern from one of my design books. This symbol is from ancient Chinese philosophy which shows how things which are contrary can also be interconnected. This my simplified version.
Etching is a fun but time-consuming process. I start out with sheet silver, then print the pattern on special paper. I burnish the design onto the heated metal and then peel off the paper. The silver sheet is then floated on an acid bath where the exposed metal gets etched with the pattern. The silver is neutralized in a bath and the special blue paper for the design is scrubbed off with a solvent. The piece is cut out of the sheet using a jeweler's saw, refined and polished.
In this case I burnished 24K Gold foil onto the circular part of the Yin and Yang. This process is called Keumboo. I then painted it with patina to get the amazing copper and blue colors which shimmer when the sun shines on the earrings at an angle.
Sterling silver ear wires were added. These can be switched to comfortable sterling silver clip ons for an additional charge.
